Purpose

Statewide partnership comprised of the Intercultural Development Research Association (IDRA) and high-need school districts, including HISD; designed to increase the number of bilingual and English as a Second Language teachers placed in high-need Title 1 schools

Recruitment

75 interns during grant period

Eligibility

  • Certification Areas – bilingual and ESL
  • Be accepted into the HISD Alternative Certification Program (apply at http://dept.houstonisd.org/acp/applicant/acp4a.htm)

Benefits

  • Reimbursement of UST tuition required for HISD-ACP program
  • Reimbursement for testing and certification fees – $410
  • Reimbursement for materials (textbooks) – $400
  • Platicas (professional development) stipend – $200
  • Possible scholarship to attend La Semana Early Childhood Conference

Commitments

  • Remain a teacher-of-record at an HISD high-need school for 3 full school years
  • Teach bilingual or ESL students during the three year commitment
  • Attend four Platicas (professional development) hosted by IDRA during internship year

Purpose

The goal of the TTCP Grant is to recruit, prepare, place and retain 150 core subject teachers to serve HISD Title 1 students.

Recruitment

150 interns during grant period

Eligibility

  • Certification Areas – core subjects (includes Gen EC-4, Gen 4-8, and special education)
  • Overall GPA of 3.0 or higher as calculated by HISD Human Resources at time of application to HISD-ACP
  • Be accepted into the HISD Alternative Certification Program (apply at http://dept.houstonisd.org/acp/applicant/acp4a.htm)

Benefits

  • Reimbursement of UST tuition required for HISD-ACP program
  • Reimbursement for testing and certification fees – $410
  • Reimbursement for materials (textbooks) – $400
  • Classroom Materials budget – $500
  • Partial program fee reimbursement – $1,500

Commitments

  • Remain a teacher-of-record at an HISD high-need school for 3 full school years
  • Teach core subjects during three year commitment period
  • Attend monthly targeted professional development provided by ACP during second and third teaching years

SMART Project Grant Overview


The primary goal of the Science and Mathematics Alternative Route to Teaching Project (SMART Project) Grant is to recruit, prepare, and retain 150 math and science teachers to serve HISD students in urban classrooms.  The U. S. Department of Education Transition to Teaching Programs Division has awarded a five-year grant to the Houston Independent School District Alternative Certification Program (HISD-ACP).  The SMART Project Grant supports the recruitment and retention of highly-qualified mid-career professionals and recent college graduates who have not majored in education to teach in high-need schools in HISD through its Alternative Certification Program. 

Purpose

Increase the number of certified mathematics and science teachers in high-need HISD schools 

Recruitment

Cohort 1 – 40 interns (2008-2009) apply by 04/14/08  to begin April training
Cohort 2 – 50 interns (2009-2010)
Cohort 3 – 60 interns (2010-2011)

Eligibility

  • Certification Areas – mathematics and science
  • THEA Scores: 270 Math; 250 Reading; 220 Writing
  • Be accepted into the HISD Alternative Certification Program (apply at http://dept.houstonisd.org/acp/applicant/acp4a.htm)

Benefits

  • Partial program fee reimbursement – $2,500
  • Professional library – $700 to help begin building
  • Professional development workshops (content specific, Rice University School Mathematics Project and Baylor College of Medicine Center for Educational Outreach) and classroom content materials – $1,800

Commitments

  • Remain a teacher-of-record at an HISD high-need school for three full school years
  • Teach mathematics or science during three year commitment period
  • Attend monthly targeted professional development provided by ACP during second and third teaching years
